The purpose of this literature review is to provide a basis to develop an effective stress management program by describing the stressors, mediating factors and stress responses of patients with coronary heart disease (CHD).
The psychosocial stressors of CHD are showed that the onset factors of stress were important changes of life events, type A behavior pattern, itself of CHD.
The mediating factors to decrease stress are the personality such as hardiness and locus of control, social support and coping. The person who received social support and increased hardiness can do easily compliance and adaptation, and were reduced mortality and morbidity due to a little stress symptom. A CHD patients have internal locus of control cope with stress well. After heart attack, patients with CHD was difficult to adapt because they used more common affective coping methods than problem solving coping methods.
Physiological stress responses of CHD patients to the damaged heart result in increased blood pressure, heart rate, cortisol, and demand for myocardial oxygen because of increasing stimuli of sympathetic nerve system. Psychological stress responses were a anxiety and depression, which can result in negative effect on disease process and recovery.
